Jay-Z ‘Runs’ AC! by Jasmine Whaley

Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour makes a stop in Atlantic City, NJ
New Jersey
- Whenever Jay-Z comes to town, there is always an explosive amount of excitement from the whole state and beyond- New Jersey was no different. Saturday night (March 13) at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa added another show to his roster of completely sold-out concerts and at $150 a ticket, that’s more than impressive. It would be an understatement to say the Brooklyn-born rapper commands a stage, he demolishes it.
He performed for thousands of fans, bringing with him a live band appropriately called ‘the Roc Boys’, which included a horn section, percussionist, and DJ. Stage decoration included two Jumbotron-style screens hanging on each side of the stage that alternated between close-ups and artistic video views of the stage. There were also backing strips of tall, vertical LED screens which absolutely added a special touch to the whole concert.

The sultry R&B superstar Trey Songz was the opening act. Definitely a female pleaser, he performed majority of his hits including, “Can’t Help But Wait,” “I Need A Girl,””Last Time,” and others. The ladies especially went crazy during his performance of, “Neighbors Know My Name,” and, “Invented Sex.”Trey was unquestionably a good pick for an opening act, but the real show began when Hov took the stage.
Jay was accompanied by former neighbor and labelmate, Memphis Bleek (hypeman) during his whole set. The crowd vibed with him as he performed some of his latest hits, including the smash, “On to the Next One,” as well as, “Run this Town,” and “D.O.A.” One of the crowd favorites was definitely, “Empire State of Mind.” The crowd roared as the New York skyscraper-like light display filled the backdrop of the stage and singer Bridget Kelly came out to sing Alicia Keys’ verse. Another highlight of the night was when Trey Songz returned to the stage to help Jay with the hooks on “Already Home,” which originally features KiD CuDi and, “Heart of the City.”Commanding the stage side-by-side with Hov, Trey undeniable belonged there.

Then, the Jumbotrons turned to a clip of Mr. President Barack Obama’s speech in North Carolina in which he undoubtly made a reference to Jay-Z when he dusted off his shoulders. He said, “That’s what you gotta do,” “so let’s do it,” Jay responded. Then the electrifying beat of “Dirt off Ur Shoulder” proceeded to play and bumped the crowd’s energy level to whole ‘nother plane. Jay fooled the crowd into the thinking the show was over after he finished up, “Thank You,” off the Blueprint 3 album (I even saw a few people heading towards the exit). He then announced that the next portion of the show was called ‘Overtime’ and that fans who only knew of his more recent albums including, ‘BP3’ and “Kingdom Come,” should just go home as this is for his fans that have been rockin’ with him since day one. Being the megastar that he is and having been in the game for over 20 years, Jay-Z has far too many hits to play in one concert. With the help of his DJ, he proceeded to perform a nearly 30-minute melody of his older hits including, “Big Pimpin’,” “Excuse Me Miss,”,"Best Of Me,”, “Money Ain’t a Thing,” and countless others. He even performed his verse from T.I.’s “Swagger Like Us.”

Before he left the stage, he took time out to acknowledge his fans, a truly humble portion of his set. Saying, “I’m not jaded I appreciate every single person in this building.” He then went on to shout out some of the members of the audience. At one point, he brought a girl up on to the stage and took a picture with her; it was her 14th show. After this heartfelt segment of his set, the horns from his hit, “Encore,” began to play. Needless to say, it sounds absolutely incredible with a live band. As Jay made his exit off the stage, and the horns still blaring, many fans in the audience began to put their diamonds in the sky as a tribute to a night we all will remember. Rest assure, seeing Jay-Z perform live is well worth every penny.

iS Note: Rapper Young Jeezy, a headliner of the tour, was unable to perform at this show.
