EVENT RECAP: Official Media Welcome Event for the Democratic National Convention

iSocialite is at the DNC! “In November when Obama wins, the Republicans are going to be singing this,” he said before playing Queen’s, “Another One Bites the Dust”. Biz Markie made the crowd go wild last night at the Official Media Welcome Event at the North Carolina Music Factory in Charlotte North Carolina, Host City of the 2012 National Democratic Convention

The festivities began at 6pm, Locals and out-of-towners mingled between the facilities, enjoying multiple open bars and free buffets; it was a smorgasbord among smorgasbords! There was a Candy Bar with patriotic candy, Club 2012 with fried chicken and shrimp, VBGB with pretzel bites and burgers, Halo with a refreshing bruschetta bar, just to name 3 of the 10 complimentary services.

The rain came down in efforts to end the Welcome Event early, but nine shuttle buses filled with democrats ready to celebrate in the name of Obama ran every ten minutes between the Charlotte Convention Center and NC Music Factory. No rain could keep us down; we migrated from the outside to the insides and resumed our celebrations! Music flooded the airwaves of every amphitheater, bar, and building. 8 o’clock approached and majorities shifted to Halo, a tasteful lounge, to witness the legendary Biz Markie turn the party level up a notch. He did his thing on the ones and twos! He didn’t just mix music; he made the crowd enjoy themselves. Black, white, Hispanic, oriental, 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, no one was excluded from the mix. We danced to Kanye West and Estelle’s, “American Boy”, Whitney Houston’s, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”, Rihanna’s, “Don’t Stop the Music”, Pit Bull’s, “I Know You Want Me”. These selections were just to get the party started as the night went on we journeyed to the 70’s and then the 90’s into the millennium. The crowd sang every word together and happily. It was as if all of the issues and differences we had were non-existent for the time being.

"We gon’ be partying like this in November. Y’all know that right?” Biz mentioned over the music. The crowd went crazy!

While the crowd rocked out, there was another crowd being entertained by comedians. There was literally something for everybody. “He picked on me the whole time, that leprechaun he joked about, he was referring to me. Oh, But I loved it,” said participant Eric Montgomery.

Not too long after we partied with Biz Markie, the crowd shifted to the Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheater to enjoy the sounds of none other than North Carolina’s own, Anthony Hamilton! Hamilton performed a striking show, just amazing! “He owned the stage,” Alexus Tucker, an intern for The Washington Center said. He let us know how North Carolina “gets down”, then performed hits like “Coming From Where I’m From” , “Cool” and, “Giving you the best of me”. Ending with the crowd’s favorite, “Charlene”, He closed by saying, “I am Anthony Hamilton and I am a Democrat. Obama for president, and I approve this message!”

Just like that, the kick-off events for the Democratic National Convention came to a successful end. Nearly a thousand participants made their way back to their cars and shuttle bus services. Stay tuned to more recaps from the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
